Born on 21 July 1896 in Brampton, Ontario - son of Wylie Cable Clark, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - enlistment records provide the following: present address same as father, trade as student, single, no current or previous military service, Presbyterian, height of 6 feet 2 inches, chest of 35 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 196th Battalion, CEF, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on 13 March 1916 (number 910887) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 July 1917 - sent to England for duty with the Royal Air Force on 3 June 1918 - seconded to the Royal Air Force from 16 October to 7 December 1918.
