Born on 11 February 1895 in Liverpool, England - son of Jane Smith, Liverpool, England - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as labourer; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 7 inches; chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; dark brown eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 59th Battalion, CEF, on 19 April 1915 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 27 June 1915 (number 410624) - transferred to the 85th Battalion, CEF, on 1 November 1915 - transferred to the 13th Battalion, CEF, on 5 December 1916 - rejoined the 85th Battalion on 24 February 1917 - wounded on 12 or 14 April 1917 - transferred to the 260th Battalion, Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force, on 26 September 1918.
