Joined the 21st Battalion, CEF, in Kingston, Ontario, on 4 May 1915 (number 59837) - landed in France with the 21st Battalion on 14 September 1915 - invalided sick to England on 17 March 1916 - commissioned and promoted to lieutenant with the 39th Battalion, CEF, on 20 November 1916 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 November or 1 December 1916 - attended a grenade course from 17 to 23 December 1916 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 24 December 1916 - attended a Machine Gun Course, 4th Divisional School, on 27 December 1916 - attached to the 16th Canadian Machine Gun Company, CEF, from 1 January to 1 October 1917 - attached to the Canadian Machine Gun Reinforcement Camp, CEF, from 2 October to 19 October 1917 - transferred to the 2nd Battalion, CEF, on 20 October 1917.
