Lieutenant Reginald Heber Manning Jolliffe

Born on 24 November 1893 in Campbellford, Ontario - son of the (Methodist) Reverend Thomas W. and (his second wife) Elvira A. (nee Manning) Jolliffe, Toronto, Ontario - educated at Cannington Public School, Bowmanville Public School and Bowmanville High School - educated at Victoria College, University of Toronto, from 1913 to 1914 - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address same as mother; trade as student; Methodist; currently a member of the 34th Ontario Regiment; height of 6 feet 2 inches; dark complexion; blue eyes; black hair.

Joined the 19th Battalion, CEF, in the fall of 1914 - served with the 19th Battalion for five months after being invalided for several weeks and discharged in mid-1915 as medically unfit having contracted "rheumatism" - spent several months in hospital - joined the 182nd Battalion, CEF, as a Lieutenant in Whitby, Ontario, on 23 January 1916 - served as Signal Officer with the 182nd Battalion - departed Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 26 September 1916 - arrived at Liverpool, England, on 5 October 1916 - posted to the Canadian Military School at Thorncliffe, England - sent to the RCR and PPCLI Depot at Seaford, England, on 23 December 1916 - later transferred to the 7th Reserve Battalion, CEF - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, as a Lieutenant on 6 or 9 March 1917 - proceeded towards the front on 23 March 1917 - spent a week with the 4th Entrenching Battalion, CEF - joined the 38th Battalion in the field on 2 April 1917 - killed in action on 9 April 1917, "...after he had passed the first German line and was
approaching the second trench", reportedly having "been wounded early in the morning and only was discovered late at night" - buried in Villers Station Cemetery (grave IX.A.4), France.
