Born on 13 December 1897 in Zurich, Ontario - son of William Hildebrandt, Hensall, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Hensall, Ontario, trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 5.5 inches, chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair.

Joined the 161st Battalion, CEF, in Hensall, Ontario, on 20 February 1916 (number 654526) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 December 1916 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 16 June 1919.
