Born on 3 October 1886 in Peterborough, Ontario - husband of Elsie Wilson Hammond (nee Kohl of Brantford, Ontario), Brantford, Ontario - educated at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Brantford, Ontario, trade as banker with the Bank of Montreal, Church of England, currently a member of the 14th Prince of Wales Own Regiment, no previous military service.
Qualified for a commission at the School of Infantry, Barriefield Camp, Ontario, on 1 August 1915.
Joined the 77th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, as a Lieutenant and platoon commander on 25 August 1915 - sailed overseas on 19 June 1916 - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, in England as a Lieutenant on 7 July 1916 - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - invalided sick to England on 17 January 1917 - seconded to the 3rd Canadian Command Depot from 19 May 1917 - seconded as the adjutant of the 3rd Canadian Command Depot from 12 January to 6 December 1918 - promoted to Captain during that period - repatriated to Canada on 30 December 1918.

This man was my grandfather. By all accounts he was a gentle, kindly man. Sadly, he died before I was born, so I never knew him. Even my father, (A.B. Hammond, DFC and bar)didn't know him very well, as his parents separated when my dad was only four, and he only saw his father again after WWII. I have a photo of Douglas Hammond in uniform 1916 if you're interested.
