Born on 26 May 1895 in Chalk River, Ontario - husband of Victoria Dean Halliday, Pembroke, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Moore Lake, Ontario, trade as labourer, married, no current or previous military service, Methodist, height of 6 feet 2 inches, weight of 170 pounds, chest of 39 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 130th Battalion, CEF, in Pembroke, Ontario, on 5 February 1916 (number 788885) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 14 or 15 November 1916 - wounded on 8 August 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 26 September 1917 - wounded on 13 January 1918 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 21 January 1918 - invalided sick to England on 30 October 1918.
