Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Vancouver, British Columbia, on 17 March 1915 (number 411052) - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in France on 16 July 1915 - transferred to the Canadian Base Depot at Le Havre, France, in April 1916 - promoted to Corporal in April 1916 - promoted to Sergeant in December 1916 - transferred to the Canadian Salvage Corps in March 1917 - transferred to the CAEC on 27 September 1917 - repatriated to Canada and discharged in May 1919.
Graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1921.
