Born on 12 July 1892 in Brightlingsea, Essex, England - son of Thomas Blyth, Brightlingsea, Essex, England - attestation form notes trade as carpenter, single, no current or previous military service, height of 5 feet 3 inches, chest of 35 inches, dark complexion, grey eyes, fair hair, Presbyterian.

Joined the 38th Battalion in Ottawa, Ontario, on 27 March 1915 (number 410456) - served with the battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 18 November 1916 - invalided to England on 4 December 1916.
