Joined the 130th Canadian Infantry Battalion in Perth, Ontario, on 16 March 1916 (number 787153) embarked onboard SS Lapland from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 23 September 1916 - arrived in Liverpool, England, on 6 October 1916 - struck off strength of the 130th Battalion the same day - taken on the strength of the 12th Battalion the same day - struck off the strength of the 12th Battalion on 14 November 1916 - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion in France on 15 November 1916 - absent without leave from 26 June to 2 July 1917 - in confinement awaiting trial on 2 July 1917 - tried by Field General Court Martial on 28 July 1917 for "When on active service, desertion", found not guilty of desertion, but found guilty of absence without leave and sentenced to twenty-eight days of Field Punishment No. 1 and forfeiture of seven days' pay - sentence confirmed by Brigadier-General J.H.
