Born on 29 September 1897 in Wiarton, Ontario - son of Mary Shaffer, Collingwood, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Collingwood, Ontario; trade as broom maker; single; no current or previous military service; Methodist; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair.

Joined the 157th Battalion, CEF, in Collingwood, Ontario, on 8 January 1916 (number 642764) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 27 or 28 March 1918 - wounded on 2 September 1918 - invalided to England on 9 September 1918.
