Born on 30 April 1897 in Hastings County, Ontario - son of William Polmateer, Steenburg, Ontario - brother of Private Melvin Everett Polmateer, 38th Battalion, CEF - at the time of his conscription in 1918: present address in Ormsby, Ontario; single; Methodist; trade as labourer; no current or previous military service; height of 5 feet 10 inches; chest of 32.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; fair hair.
Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, CEF, in Kingston, Ontario, on 3 January 1918 (number 3055287) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 17 or 18 August 1918 - wounded on 30 September 1918 - invalided to England on 3 October 1918.
