Private James McCarthy

Born on 14 September 1885 in St. Catharines, Ontario - husband of E. McCarthy, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario; trade as carpenter; married; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 11.5 inches; chest of 42 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.

Joined the 176th Battalion, CEF, in St. Catharines, Ontario, on 20 May 1916 (number 850681) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 or 30 March 1918 - captured and made a prisoner of war on 10 August 1918 - repatriated on 27 November 1918.
