Born on 22 July 1898 in Guthrie Township, Ontario - son of Mrs. Patrick Garvey, Killaloe, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address same as mother, trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 6 feet 0.125 inches, weight of 160 pounds, chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 14 September 1916 (number 1042130) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 10 or 11 November 1917 - wounded on 12 or 13 August 1918 - invalided to England on 14 August 1918.
