Born on 23 June 1897 in Arnprior, Ontario - son of Thomas and Brigette Carney, Arnprior, Ontario - enlistment records provide the following: trade as millhand, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 5 inches, chest of 34.5 inches fully expanded, medium complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 80th Battalion, CEF, in Smiths Falls, Ontario, on 24 September 1915 (number 219986) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, in England on 18 July 1916 - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 20 December 1917 - invalided to England on 28 December 1917.
