Born on 23 March 1897 in Burritts Rapids, Ontario - son of William Carlin, Burritts Rapids, Ontario - enlistment records provide the following: present address in Burritts Rapids, Ontario, trade as school-boy, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 7 inches, chest of 32.5 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, blue eyes, hazel hair.

Joined the 156th Battalion, CEF, in Kemptville, Ontario, on 10 January 1916 (number 639201) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - wounded on 13 August 1917 - died of these wounds on 14 August 1917 - buried in Villers Station Cemetery (grave X.E.16), France.
