Born on 7 May 1899 in Newcastle, New Brunswick - son of Wm. J. Bate, Newcastle, New Brunswick - attestation form notes present address in Fredericton, New Brunswick, trade as rough carpenter, single, no current military service, previously served three years as a Cadet company commander, height of 5 feet 6 inches, chest of 36 inches, light complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, Church of England.

Joined the Canadian Engineers on 16 May 1917 (number 2006041) - taken on the strength of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in France on 10 May 1918 - transferred to the 38th Battalion on 5 June 1918 - wounded on 29 September 1918 - invalided to England on 3 October 1918.
