Born on 1 September 1897 in Spencerville, Ontario - son of Mrs. Elizabeth Kingston, Spencerville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Spencerville, Ontario; trade as farmer; single; no current or previous military service; Presbyterian; height of 6 feet 0 inches; chest of 38.5 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; grey eyes; light to auburn hair.

Joined the 156th Battalion, CEF, in Spencerville, Ontario, on 4 February 1916 (number 639515) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 24 May 1917 - wounded on 4 April 1918 - invalided to England on 9 April 1918.
