Born on 1 July 1894 in St. Mary's, Ontario - next of kin listed as John Courtney Gilpin, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as student, single, no current or previous military service, Wesleyan, height of 5 feet 5.5 inches, chest of 35 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, brown eyes, dark hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on 5 April 1915 (number 411093) - transferred to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 17 July 1915 - wounded on 21 April 1916 - transferred to the 46th Battalion, CEF, on 30 November 1916 - wounded on 20 August 1917 - seconded to the Canadian Records Office in London, England, from 2 November 1917 to 30 July 1919.

Awarded the Military Cross.
