Born on 20 March 1883 in Oxford, England - son of Joseph Brockhall, Oxford, England - brother of Mrs. T. Swailes, Coley-Reading, Berks, England - recruitment form notes the following: present address in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, a "defaulter" under the Military Service Act, single, Church of England, trade as farm labourer, no current or previous military service, height of 5 feet 3 inches, chest of 36 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair.

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment, in Regina, Saskatchewan, on 5 January 1918 (number 4090149) - taken on the strength of the 28th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 6 September 1918 - transferred to the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 21 or 22 September 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 5 May 1919.
