Born on 6 February 1887 in Brockville, Ontario - son of John and Mary Anne Barnhart, Brockville, Ontario - enlistment form notes trade as brakeman, single, no current military service, previously served three years with 41st Regiment and three months with Royal Canadian Dragoons, height of 5 feet 9 inches, chest of 35 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England.
Joined the 38th Battalion on 5 March 1915 (number 410448) - served with the battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the battalion on 13 August 1916 - injured accidentally and invalided to England on 15 July 1917.
