Born on 31 December 1897 in Bathurst Township, Lanark County, Ontario – son of James Truelove, Wemyss, Ontario – at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Wemyss, Ontario; trade as farmer; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 4.75 inches; chest of 34.5 inches fully expanded; weight of 110 pounds; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 12 September 1916 (number 1042128) – taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 18 or 19 January 1918 – invalided sick to England on 10 May 1918.
