Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Cosford Sparling

Born on 6 February 1880 in Kerwood, Ontario - husband of Mabel E. Sparling, Ottawa, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address same as wife; trade as manufacturer; Wesleyan; previously served with the Mississauga Horse.

Joined the 73rd Battalion, CEF, as a major in 1915 - promoted to lieutenant-colonel on 12 August 1916 - transferred to the 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade, CEF, as Brigade-Major on 7 July 1917 - served as General Staff Officer 2 with 33rd Division from 5 March to 12 May 1918 - attached to the 38th Battalion, CEF, to perform the duties of commanding officer from 16 June to 3 July and from 10 to 26 July 1918 - served with the 16th Infantry Brigade, Siberia, from 26 December 1918 to 29 May 1919.

Awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

Awarded a Mention-in-Despatches.
