Born on 5 April 1883 in Amherst Island, Ontario - son of Thomas D. Smith, Emerald, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Emerald, Ontario; trade as farmer; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 7.5 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; brunette complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 253rd Battalion, CEF, in Hella, Ontario, on 3 January 1917 (number 1090116) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 9 or 10 August 1918 - wounded on 29 September 1918 - invalided to England on 5 October 1918.
