Born on 20 June 1889 in Snowdon Township, Haliburton County, Ontario - son of John Shaw, Snowdon Township, Haliburton County, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Gelert[?], Ontario; trade as lumberman; single; no current or previous military service; Church of England; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; blue eyes; black hair.

Joined the 109th Battalion, CEF, in Lindsay, Ontario, on 3 April 1916 (number 724197) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 16 June 1919.
