Born on 18 April 1894 in Ottawa, Ontario - son of William Saunders, Ottawa, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in June 1915: trade as laborer; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 33.25 inches fully expanded; dark complexion; grey eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 26th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 29 June 1915 (number 89775) - [then] - joined the 77th Battalion, CEF, on 10 August 1915 (number 144382) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Bermuda on 6 December 1915 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 25 May 1916 - joined the Canadian Ordnance Corps, CEF, on 22 June 1918 (number 2776914) - served in Canada only.
