Born on 9 December 1887 in Ottawa, Ontario - name also listed as Patrick Nolan - brother of Frank Nolan, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Rochester, New York; trade as carpenter; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 9.25 inches; chest of 39 inches fully expanded; ruddy complexion; hazel eyes; black hair.

Joined the 213th Battalion, CEF, in St. Catharines, Ontario, on 25 November 1916 (number 264768) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 19 or 20 February 1918 - wounded on 28 September 1918 - invalided to England on 1 October 1918.
