Born on 1 August 1893 in Ottawa, Ontario - son of Mrs. Mary Quinn, Lockerbie, Scotland - brother of Frank Quinn, Ottawa, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as plasterer; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 6 inches; chest of 37 inches fully expanded; weight of 135 pounds; medium complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Barriefield Camp, Ontario, on 28 May 1915 (number 410596) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - evacuated sick with influenza to No.13 Canadian Field Ambulance, CEF, on 25 December 1916 - rejoined 38th Battalion on 9 January 1917 - sentenced to 21 days' Field Punishment No.1 for being absent without leave - wounded on 1 November with a gunshot wound to the right hand - wounded on 12 November 1917 with a gas burn to the right leg - admitted to No.12 Field Ambulance, CEF, with gas poisoning on 12 November 1917 - admitted to No.2 Australian General Hospital in Wimereux on 13 November 1917 - invalided to England on 20 November 1917 and posted to the Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot, CEF - placed under command of 3rd Canadian Convalescent Depot on 7 August 1918 - discharged from the 3rd Canadian Convalescent Depot on 4 October 1918 - transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps Base Depot in Sunningdale on 4 October 1918 - posted to Company 136, District 53, Canadian Forestry Corps on 11 October 1918 - struck off strength to the CFC Base Depot in Sunningdale on 21 November 1918 - repatriated to Canada on 14 January 1919 - discharged from the CEF at #3 District Depot, Ottawa, Ontario, on 4 February 1919.
