Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Brockville, Ontario, on 25 January 1915 (number 410584) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion in England on 18 July 1916 - taken on the strength of the 3rd Labour Battalion, CEF, on 9 February 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 28 July 1917 - wounded on 27 September 1918 - invalided to England on 30 September 1918.
