Born on 11 August 1897 in Montreal, Quebec - son of Edward L. McMahon, Lowell, Massachusetts - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Woodstock, New Brunswick; trade as labourer; single; no current or previous military service; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 5.5 inches; chest of 33 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; light blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 237th Battalion, CEF, in Woodstock, New Brunswick, on 22 August 1916 (number 1033268) - taken on the strength of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, CEF, on 13 or 14 December 1916 - sent to England on 12 January 1917 - transferred to the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 29 or 30 November 1917 - transferred to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry on 7 December 1917 - wounded on 27 August 1918.
