Born on 5 November 1894 in Quadville, Ontario - son of Mrs. William Gruntz, Quadville, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Quadville, Ontario, trade as labourer, single, no current or previous military service, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 4 inches, weight of 145 pounds, chest of 34.5 inches fully expanded, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, fair hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, as a lance-corporal in Renfrew, Ontario, on 5 August 1916 (number 1042069) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, as a private on 11 or 12 July 1917 - invalided sick to England on 31 October 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 12 April 1918 - wounded on 30 September 1918 - invalided to England on 12 October 1918.
