Born on 27 October 1898 in Pembroke, Ontario - son of Joseph Hamilton, Pembroke, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1917: present address in Pembroke, Ontario, trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Church of England, height of 5 feet 10.5 inches, weight of 150 pounds, chest of 37 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 240th Battalion, CEF, in Renfrew, Ontario, on 5 January 1917 (number 1042682) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 10 or 11 November 1917 - invalided sick to England on 26 January 1918.
