Lance-Corporal Merritt Sterling Glasford, MM

Born on 4 July 1896 in Ashley, Michigan - son of James J. and Ella Glasford, Oneida County, New York - nephew of Arthur Glasford, Westdale, New York - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as telegraph operator, single, no current or previous military service, Presbyterian, height of 5 feet 9.25 inches, chest of 36.5 inches fully expanded, ruddy complexion, hazel eyes, black hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 15 March 1915 (number 410958) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - invalided sick to England on 29 May 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 21 December 1917 - killed in action on 27 September 1918 - buried in Quarry Wood Cemetery (grave III.A.2), France.

Awarded the Military Medal - no official citation - unit recommendation dated 17 April 1917: "For gallant conduct during action of Apr. 9/17."
