Company Quartermaster-Sergeant George Albert Garbutt, MM

Born on 11 July 1883 in Grahamsville, Ontario - son of Elizabeth Garbutt, Malton, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Malton, Ontario, trade as farmer, single, no current military service, previously served with the Governor General's Body Guard (three years), Prebyterian, height of 5 feet 9.5 inches, chest of 38.5 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair.

Joined the 126th Battalion, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 24 January 1916 (number 775624) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 27 April 1919.

Awarded the Military Medal - no citation - unit recommendation dated 3 July 1917: "He showed most gallant and consistent leadership during attack on La Coulotte and Avion."

Unit recommendation for an unnamed decoration, likely a Military Medal, dated 17 April 1917: "For gallant conduct operations of Apr. 9/17." - no award made

  1. George Albert Garbutt was the son of Wilson Garbutt and Elizabeth Graham Garbutt. Edgar Garbutt was his brother. I have a picture of each of them, in uniform, if you'd like me to send them.
