Captain Percy Harold Gardner, MC

Born on 28 June 1895 in Arnprior, Ontario - son of Herbert Winter Wills Gardner, Arnprior, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: trade as merchant, single, currently a member of the 42nd Regiment (one year), no previous military service, Church of England, height of 5 feet 7 inches, chest of 36 inches fully expanded, swarthy complexion, blue eyes, black hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 26 March 1915 - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 22 February 1917 - invalided to England on 11 March 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 9 July 1917 - invalided sick to England on 19 February 1919.

Awarded the Military Cross - official citation: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the course of five days the enemy made three attempts to raid his company`s front, but on no occasion did any of the enemy succeed in entering the front line. This was largely due to his skilful dispositions and organization and to the splendid example of courage and devotion to duty which was an inspiration to his men.” - unit recommendation dated 31 March 1918: “Recommended for consistent good work. He was in command of “D” Company when three attacks were launched against them in five days. None of the enemy reached our trenches. This was largely due to the efficient and effective organization of the front line garrison as made by Capt. Gardner”.

Awarded a Mention-in-Despatches - London Gazette Number 30107, 1 June 1917 - no citation - unit recommendation dated 3 March 1917: “For distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty.”

Recommended for a Military Cross - unit recommendation dated 3 March 1917: “This Officer displayed splendid courage and leadership while in command of No.2 Party during raid on enemy trenches Feb 22/17.” - no award made
