Born on 26 June 1897 in Alliston, Ontario - son of Martha Faulkner, Alliston, Ontario - at the time of his enlistment in 1915: present address in Alliston, Ontario, trade as farmer, single, no current or previous military service, Presbyterian, height of 6 feet 0.5 inches, chest of 35.5 inches fully expanded, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 126th Battalion, CEF, in Toronto, Ontario, on 18 October 1915 (number 775282) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 4 or 6 December 1916 - wounded on 7 May 1917 - transferred to the Canadian Labour Pool on 25 October 1917 - transferred to the Young Men's Christian Association on 28 November 1917 - transferred to the 1st Canadian Infantry Works Battalion on 2 May 1918.
