Born on 22 February 1898 in Melford, Ontario - son of John Edward Dainard, Hastings, Ontario - at the time of his conscription in 1918: present address in Hastings, Ontario, single, Presbyterian, trade as tanner, no current or previous military service, height of 5 feet 3 inches, chest of 37 inches fully expanded, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair.

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, in Barriefield, Ontario, on 17 May 1918 (number 3060041) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 10 or 11 October 1918 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 5 May 1919.
