Born on 12 December 1892 in Oshawa, Ontario - next of kin listed as F.W. Cowan, Oshawa, Ontario - at time of enlistment in 1915: trade as manufacturer, single, no current or previous military service, Presbyterian, height of 5 feet 8 inches, chest of 36 inches fully expanded, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair.

Joined the 37th Battalion, CEF, in Niagara Camp, Ontario, on 15 June 1915 - served as Staff Captain, Staff of MMD[?], Overseas Military Forces of Canada, from 21 October 1916 to 10 February 1917 - attached to 12th Canadian Infantry Brigade Headquarters from 3 March to 7 November 1917 - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, on 3 June 1917 - sent to England on 7 November 1917 - served as Adjutant, No. 54 District, Canadian Forestry Corps, 20 November 1917 to 1 March 1918 - served as Staff Captain, Canadian Forestry Corps Headquarters, 19 May to 28 August 1918 - served as Staff Captain, Headquarters, Canadian Forestry Corps France, 9 September 1918 - served as Deputy Adjutant Quartermaster General, Headquarters Canadian Forestry Corps France, 29 August 1918 to 10 February 1919.

Awarded the Order of the British Empire.
