Born on 24 May 1893 in Edinburgh, Scotland - brother of Lizzie Levinson, Montreal, Quebec - enlistment records provide the following: trade as laborer, single, no current or previous military service, Church of England, height of 5 feet 4 inches, chest of 36 inches fully expanded, swarthy complexion, greyish eyes, dark hair.

Joined the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Cornwall, Ontario, on 22 January 1915 (number 410473) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 26 June 1917 - invalided to England on 4 July 1917.
