Warrant Officer Class I (Regimental Sergeant Major) Timothy Carroll, DCM

Born on 24 July 1881 in Banagher, Kings County, Ireland - husband of Mrs. M. Carroll, Dublin, Ireland (1919 enlistment) - son of Margret Galvin, Dublin, Ireland - enlistment records provide the following: present address (1919 enlistment) in Ottawa, Ontario, trade as proof reader (1914 enlistment) / soldier (1919 enlistment), single (1914 enlistment) / married (1919 enlistment), no current military service (1914 enlistment), previously served with the 1st Battalion Irish Guards from 15 May 1902 to 14 May 1914, Roman Catholic, height of 5 feet 9.5 inches, weight of 169 pounds, chest of 37 inches fully expanded, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair.

Joined the Canadian Permanent Army Pay Corps for three years' general service at sea on 15 May 1914 - [how did he transfer to the 38th???] - joined the 38th Battalion on 20 February 1915 (number 41002???) - served with the 38th Battalion during its period of garrison duty in Bermuda - landed in France with the 38th Battalion on 13 August 1916 - wounded on 8 or 9 April 1917 - invalided to England on 11 April 1917 - rejoined the 38th Battalion on 6 June 1917 - sent to England for Officers' Training Course on 27 October 1918.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal - citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, from 25th February to 16th/17th September, 1918. During every tour in the front line he has superintended the distribution of rations, and every night has been subjected to enemy shell and machine-gun fire. In the operations in front of Amiens and the attack on the Drocourt-Queant line, he did most excellent work, having taken an officer's place in holding the line and repelling a counter-attack. His work has always been of the highest order." - unit recommendation dated 21 September 1918: "For continuous good service and devotion to duty at C.S.M. of "A" Coy and R.S.M. of the Battalion."

Awarded the Croix de Guerre (Belgium) - no citation - unit recommendation dated 8 October 1918: "Recommended for a Foreign Decoration."

Joined the ??? in Ottawa, Ontario, on 14 April 1919.

Possibly a member of the regular force Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Manitoba following the war.
