Born on 23 February 1897 in Whatford, England - son of Mrs. Annie Brill, Whatford, England - at the time of his enlistment in 1916: present address in Whatford, England; trade as labourer; single; no current military service; previously served with the 77th and 38th Canadian Infantry Battalions; Roman Catholic; height of 5 feet 4 inches; chest of 35 inches fully expanded; fair complexion; blue eyes; fair hair.

Joined the 77th Battalion, CEF, in Ottawa, Ontario, on 3 September 1915 (number 145082) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion, CEF, in Bermuda on 6 December 1915 - struck off the strength of the 38th Battalion on 7 June 1916 - discharged from the CEF on 7 June 1916 as medically unfit - joined the 171st Battalion, CEF, in Quebec, Quebec, on 7 June 1916.
