Born on 11 December 1895 in Ottawa, Ontario - son of Mrs. Harry Brown, Ottawa, Ontario - enlistment records provide the following: present address in Ottawa, Ontario, trade as railway fitter, no current military service, previously served two years with the 43rd Regiment, Church of England, height of 5 feet 4 inches, chest of 33 inches fully expanded, dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair.

Joined the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column in Ottawa, Ontario, on 10 April 1917 (number 2043070) - taken on the strength of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion in France on 11 or 12 July 1917 - wounded on 5 September 1917 - invalided to England on 13 September 1917.
