Born on 12 September 1890 in Dewsburry, Yorkshire, England - husband of Nellie Auty, Appleton, Ontario - attestation form notes trade as knitter, married, no current military service, previous military service of three years, eight months with 4th King's Own Light Infantry, Yorkshire, England, height of 5 feet 4.5 inches, chest of 33 inches, fair complexion, bluish grey eyes, light brown hair, Church of England.

Joined the 130th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 7 February 1916 (number 787655) - taken on the strength of the 38th Battalion in France on 14 or 15 November 1916 - struck off the strength of the battalion on 11 December 1918 - rejoined the battalion on 14 January 1919 - sent to England on 22 February 1919.
